How to get Rid of Mold in Your Bathroom for Good

August 7, 2025 in  by Gainey Flooring

Bathroom mold is more than just an unsightly nuisance—it can lead to structural damage in your home and cause serious health issues if left untreated. Knowing how to get rid of bathroom mold is essential for maintaining a safe and healthy living environment. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to identify mold, effectively remove it, and prevent it from returning.

What Causes Mold and How to identify It

Mold thrives in moist environments, making bathrooms a common trouble spot. It can range in color from white, orange, green and black—depending on the particular strain. A common type of mold in showers, mildew—black and flat, with a powdery texture—is usually easily wiped away. More serious mold often has a slimy texture and may require a more aggressive approach to removal.

The Right Way to Remove Mold

When dealing with mold, safety is key. Protect your eyes, nose, mouth, and hands by wearing safety goggles, gloves, and an N95 respirator mask to avoid irritation and prevent inhaling mold spores. If possible, turn on your bathroom’s exhaust fan to improve ventilation during cleaning.

If the affected area is larger than 2 sq. ft., it’s best to call a professional mold removal service.

Recommended Removal Products

Most mold and mildew can be cleaned using common household items:

  • Dish Soap and Water — ideal for cleaning mildew
  • White Vinegar—effective against many mold species and a safe alternative to bleach. Spray directly onto the moldy surface and allow it to sit for a while before scrubbing.
  • Diluted Bleach Solution (1 c. bleach per 1 gal. water)—effective on hard, non-porous surfaces, but use only in a well-ventilated area. Never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar, as this can create toxic fumes.

How to Prevent Mold from Coming Back

First, fix any leaks that may have contributed to the mold growth. Then, maintain a clean, dry, and well-ventilated bathroom with these tips:

  • Use an exhaust fan after showers and periodically throughout the day.
  • Leave the bathroom door open when not in use to reduce humidity.
  • Install water-resistant epoxy grout or seal your grout annually.
  • Wipe down shower walls and curtains after each use.
  • Launder bath mats and towels frequently.

Consistent upkeep can dramatically reduce the chance of mold returning.

When to Replace Instead of Clean

If the mold covers more than 2 sq. ft. or has penetrated the drywall or subfloor, cleaning might not be enough. In such cases, you may need to replace sections of the wall, floor, tile, or grout. A professional mold specialist can help assess the damage and determine whether replacement is necessary.

Now that you’ve learned how to effectively treat and prevent mold in your bathroom, you can feel confident knowing your space is clean, healthy and safe for your family.
